STANDARD CPR

Kneel at the victim's side near the chest. With the middle and index fingers of the hand nearest the victim's legs, locate the notch where the bottom rims of the rib cages meet in the middle of the chest. Place the heel of one hand on the sternum next to the fingers that located the notch. Place your other hand on top of the positioned hand, keeping fingers up off the chest wall.
Bring your shoulders directly over the victim's sternum as you press downward, keeping your arms straight. Depress the sternum about 1 1/2 to 2 inches for an adult victim. Then relax pressure completely, allowing chest to return to its normal position between compressions. Relaxation and compression should be of equal duration.
Compressions are applied at 80 to 100 times per minute. If you must provide both rescue breathing and CPR, provide 2 breaths after every 15 chest compressions.
While one person is administering standard CPR to the chest, another straddles the victim's legs and applies pressure to the stomach, synchronizing pumping action to chest compressions.
Pressure is centered on an area 11/2 to 2 inches above the navel and is applied to alternate with chest compressions - that is, when the chest is compressed the stomach is relaxed; when the stomach is compressed, the chest is relaxed. The stomach is compressed 2 to 3 inches.
As with chest compressions, stomach compressions are applied 80 to 100 times per minute.
Stomach compressions are stopped momentarily when rescue breathing is administered.
