STANDARD CPR AND DOUBLE-PUMP CPR
CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is administered when someone's breathing or pulse, or both, stop. When both stop, it spells sudden death - the usual cause is a heart attack.
The most common signal of a heart attack is uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest behind the breastbone. Other signals may be sweating, nausea, shortness of breath, or a feeling of weakness.
Should someone be felled by a heart attack, there are two CPR procedures - standard CPR and Double-Pump CPR (DP-CPR).
Standard CPR forces the heart to pump blood by applied rhythmic pressure to the lower half of the victim's breastbone.
DP-CPR, developed by David Bergman, M.D., chairman of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center's department of surgery, is a counter-propulsion technique which pumps arterial blood back toward the heart when the heart is between beats. The action forces blood from the aorta into the coronary arteries to furnish the heart muscle blood in addition to the blood it receives with each chest compression. When used in conjunction with standard CPR, DP-CPR has proven almost twice as effective as standard CPR used alone.
