STANDARD CPR AND DOUBLE-PUMP CPR: THE FIRST 4 STEPS
DP-CPR, however, has one drawback - it ordinarily requires two people to administer. Standard CPR, requires butone person.
When using Standard CPR alone or in conjunction with DP-CPR, the first 4 steps are identical.
1. Call, or have someone call the local emergency number, usually 911.
2. Determine whether the collapsed victim is unconscious by gently shaking a shoulder and shouting "Are you all right?" If there is no response, and the victim is not lying flat on his or her back, roll the victim over, moving the entire body as a unit.
3. Check for breathing by looking for chest movement, listening for breathing sounds, or feeling breath on your cheek. If the victim is not breathing, provide rescue breathing by:
• tilting the head back by lifting up the chin gently with one hand while pushing down on the forehead with the other,
• While maintaining pressure under the chin to sustain head tilt, pinch the victim's nose shut.
• Give two full breaths while maintaining an air-tight seal with your mouth on the victim's mouth.
4. Locate the victim's carotid artery to determine if the heart is beating. (The carotid pulse is located in the groove beside the Adam's apple.) If you cannot feel a pulse, provide artificial circulation (CPR) in addition to rescue breathing.
